"June in the Mirror"/ Sweet Dream
For a while, I had this as the first section of Sweet Dream, but I've also thought of using it as promotional material. Since I still haven't finished the story and because I absolutely love this "part", I've decided to share it. So as to provide it with a title, I give you:
June in the Mirror
A woman stood in front of a standing mirror in an empty room. She stared blankly between the strands of hair in her face at her reflection in the mirror. Though she recognized herself, something in her reflection felt off. At first, the clothing in the reflection matched what she was really wearing--a BigBang shirt and jeans--but the clothes in the mirror began to quickly change between a heather gray pantsuit, a black gown, and a hanbok. Giving little thought to what she saw, she exhaled and brushed the hair back from her face.
Suddenly, hands playfully came from behind the mirror and gripped both sides allowing the person behind it to lean out to his right. The woman watched him apprehensively, unsure of how she should feel. The young Korean man smiled and asked in Korean if she was his younger sister. Confused, she shook her head no. In the mirror, she could see the reflection of a man wearing a hat and bowing his head. She could not see his face.
From the hidden mouth came a deep, relaxing voice that asked her in Korean if she knew who she was. Intrigued, she turned slowly to face the man behind her, but he had become someone else entirely when she had turned around. This new man wore a mask and hoodie that covered his face. He held out his hand to her but said nothing. She leaned her head forward to see his eyes, but she could not see them.
She suddenly remembered the man holding the mirror and turned back around, but when she was facing the mirror, he had already gone. Instead, another young-faced Korean man of only nineteen leaned out from behind the other side of the mirror. His eyes were child-like, but once again, the mirror revealed a man behind her. His blue suede shoes and proximity to her drew her attention.
Quickly, she turned on her heels, but just as she had turned to see his face, her feet gave way and she stumbled backwards into herself. There was no reflective glass in the mirror and she fell back through it, falling into an empty space of gray. She yelled out in silence as she looked at the opening of the mirror. There she saw the five men staring at her as she seemed to float. She couldn’t recognize their faces through the tears in her eyes.
