"That night, she tossed in her bed as she tried to sleep, but no matter how long she lay there, she couldn’t fall asleep. June could hear the slow build of a storm raging in the distance. The heat in her bed was stifling so she got up and threw open the window, leaning out into the night. The air was crisp and stung as she took a deep breath. The world outside was spotted with the occasional street lamp. The light of the moon hid behind the clouds.
June looked up to see if there were any stars, but they were with the moon behind its blanket of clouds. The world had become completely silent. She came back in from the window to realize that the room had become the Han River. She was standing ankle deep in the water as cherry blossoms danced around her on the wind. She leaned over to see her face reflected in the still waters. A simple western gown formed around her as she stared into her own reflection. The dark black color of the dress caused her skin to appear paler.
June turned around to face the bank behind her, but the water began to rise and the dress started to feel heavy on her. She tried to move her feet, but they felt as though they had been swallowed in the river bottom. She looked up to see a man watching her from the shore. She desperately tried to call out to him, but the words would not form in her mouth. The water slowly crept up to her waist. She searched her mind for any Korean word she could think of, but it was all met with German.
She tried to call out to the man in German and lifted her hand to reach for him, but still no sound escaped her. The water ran in little rivers down her arm and into the sleeve. The Han River continued to rise.
The man turned his back on her. Tears flowed down her face as she continued to yell inaudibly. She let her hand drop into the river. The water rose to her neck.
June lost sight of the man in her tears. She tried once again to call out to the man in English. She could hear the words come from her lips. The sound rang in her ears. The water stopped. June calmed though her body was still immovable. A silver light glistened before her. The water rushed away as she hit the floor of her apartment.
June woke on the floor of her apartment practically swimming in her duvet. Her body was covered in sweat and her face was covered in tears. Terrified to mimic the actions in her nightmare, she merely looked up at her closed window. The faint orange hue of the streetlamp outside reminded her that she was in Germany. When she leaned forward to look up at the sky, she was able to see a few stars. She lifted her phone from the nightstand to check the time. It was 3 am. She must have fallen asleep at some point. Too tired to think, she climbed back into bed."
